Archaeological Heritage

Gran Canaria boasts an important and varied archaeological legacy -  a true reflection of the way of life of the island’s ancient inhabitants, the Canarians. Different parts of the island are dotted with interesting archaeological sites, some of them quite spectacular – all of them well preserved, where investigation into the prehispanic era of gran Canaria continues to take place.

Gran Canaria: Cueva Pintada (Painted Cave)

One of the island’s most outstanding legacies is the Cueva Pintada (Painted Cave), a symbiosis between nature and the intervention of man. Discovered over a century ago, The Painted Cave, excavated out of volcanic rock, constitutes the most genuine example of an artistic representation of the aborigine culture of Gran Canaria. After more than twenty years of investigation and renovation work, the general public can now visit the original cave and its legacy of a prehistoric settlement situated in Agáldar, the ancient capital of the island, known today as the city of Galdar. A guided tour of this museum and archaeological site allows the visitor to enter into a fascinating period of the prehispanic history of the Canarian Archipelago.

Here, for visitors to the island, is a brief list of the most easily accessible sites where the remains of Gran Canaria’s prehispanic culture may be viewed and appreciated.
